Frequently Asked Questions
What should I avoid doing after periodontal surgery to promote proper healing?
For the first 1–2 days, it’s important to rest, avoid strenuous activity, and keep your head slightly elevated. Refrain from vigorous rinsing, using straws, or brushing near the surgical site to prevent bleeding and disruption of the stitches.
What if I experience swelling, bruising, or bleeding after my surgery?
Mild swelling and bruising are normal and can be managed with ice packs during the first 24 hours. Slight blood in your saliva is also expected. However, if you experience persistent bleeding that doesn’t stop after applying pressure for 40 minutes, please contact our office or go to the nearest emergency department.
Can I take pain medication and antibiotics after surgery?
Yes, pain can be managed with Advil or Tylenol as directed, and antibiotics should be taken exactly as prescribed. Be sure to complete the full course of antibiotics and consider taking a probiotic between doses to support your gut health. Contact us immediately if you experience any allergic reactions or worsening symptoms after several days.
